Masseter Botox: Slim Your Jawline & Relieve TMJ Pain
2/23/2026
If you clench your jaw or want a softer facial contour, masseter Botox does both. This treatment has become one of my favorites to offer at Beauty by Blume because it addresses two concerns that many patients don't realize are connected: aesthetic jawline shape and functional jaw health.
Masseter Botox involves injecting a neuromodulator into the masseter muscle - the large, powerful jaw muscle responsible for chewing and jaw movement. This muscle sits at the angle of your jaw, and when it becomes overactive or enlarged, it can create both aesthetic and functional concerns.
WHAT IS MASSETER BOTOX?
The treatment works by relaxing the masseter muscle, which serves a dual purpose. First, it reduces the muscle's bulk over time, creating a slimmer, more contoured jawline. Second, it decreases the muscle's ability to clench or grind with excessive force, providing relief from jaw tension, teeth grinding, and TMJ-related discomfort.
What makes this treatment so effective is that the neuromodulator targets only the masseter muscle. Your ability to chew, speak, and smile remains completely intact, but you won't be grinding your teeth at night or carrying tension in your jaw throughout the day.
This treatment is ideal for patients who want to slim a bulky or overdeveloped jawline, struggle with nighttime teeth grinding, experience jaw pain or TMJ symptoms, have tension headaches related to jaw clenching, or seek a more contoured, feminine facial shape.
THE TREATMENT PROCESS
The treatment itself is quick, typically ten to fifteen minutes from start to finish. After cleansing your face and identifying the injection sites, I use a very fine needle to inject the neuromodulator into several points along the masseter muscle on each side of your face. Most patients describe the sensation as brief pressure or a slight pinch.
One of the best things about masseter Botox is that there's no downtime. You can return to work, run errands, or go about your day immediately after treatment.
TIMELINE AND WHAT TO EXPECT
Results from masseter Botox appear gradually, which is one of the reasons the outcome looks so natural. During the first week or two, you may notice functional improvements: less jaw tension when you wake up, reduced nighttime grinding, or fewer headaches. The aesthetic changes take a bit longer to become visible.
Around two to four weeks post-treatment, the masseter muscle starts to relax and reduce in size. You'll begin to see a softer, more contoured jawline as the muscle bulk decreases. By six to eight weeks, you'll see the full effect with maximum slimming and smoothing of the lower face that looks completely natural because it developed gradually over time.
Results typically last four to seven months, though many patients find that with repeated treatments, their results last progressively longer. The muscle becomes less hyperactive over time, which means maintenance treatments can often be spaced further apart. Some of my regular patients maintain their results for up to a year between treatments.
It's important to understand that masseter Botox is not a permanent solution. If you stop treatment, the muscle will gradually return to its original size and activity level over several months. However, many patients find that regular treatments significantly improve their quality of life both in terms of how they look and how they feel, making maintenance well worth it.
COMBINING MASSETER BOTOX WITH OTHER TREATMENTS
Many patients combine masseter Botox with other aesthetic treatments to achieve comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Common combinations include neuromodulators for wrinkles in areas like the forehead, glabella, or crow's feet, dermal fillers to add volume or contour other areas of the face, skin resurfacing treatments like Opus for texture and tone improvement, or biostimulators like Sculptra or PRX by WiQo for collagen building and overall facial rejuvenation.
During your consultation, we can discuss a personalized treatment plan that addresses all your aesthetic goals. Some patients prefer to start with one treatment and add others over time, while others opt for a more comprehensive approach from the beginning. There's no right or wrong answer, it's about what works best for you, your goals, and your budget.
