If you’ve ever dealt with acne, fine lines, or dull skin, then chances are you’ve heard of retinoids. These vitamin A based skincare ingredients are considered gold-standard for improving skin texture, tone, and overall health, but with so many types (i.e. retinol, retinaldehyde, tretinoin) - how do you know which one is right for you?

Hi, I am Dr. Kristen Blume from Beauty by Blume and I am here to break it down.

What Are Retinoids?

Retinoids are derivatives of vitamin A that help accelerate skin cell turnover, unclog pores, stimulate collagen, and even out pigmentation. Whether you’re battling breakouts, aging, or texture concerns, there’s likely a retinoid that can help.

Types of Retinoids: From Gentle to Powerful

1. Retinol (Over-the-Counter Favorite) - the most well-known retinoid and is ideal for beginners or those with sensitive skin.

  • Converts twice in the skin to become active
  • Offers gradual results with less irritation
  • Easily found in many drugstore and luxury skincare lines

2. Retinal (Retinaldehyde) - a step up in strength from retinol, retinal is gaining popularity as a more potent yet still well-tolerated option.

  • Requires only one conversion to become active
  • Works faster than retinol
  • Ideal for those looking to upgrade their routine for acne or aging skin

3. Prescription Retinoids (Tretinoin, Adapalene, Tazarotene) - these are the most potent forms, often used under medical guidance.

  • No conversion needed — they work directly
  • Fast and effective for acne, sun damage, and deep wrinkles
  • May cause more irritation and dryness, especially at first
